Projection terms: A Growing Glossary

What is Projection Mapping: The process of projecting images or video onto an object or surface to create a 3D visual experience.

Tech is confusing, there’s enough terms as it is, but then some (not-so) clever tech lovers come along and start using terms in different ways- lets get you grounded on the basics so that no matter what you decide to do with projector technology- you can at least sound like you know what you are doing.

  1. Surface Mapping: The process of mapping the contours and features of an object or surface to ensure that projected images align with its shape.

  2. Blend Mapping: The process of blending multiple projected images to create a seamless visual experience.

  3. Keystone Correction: The process of correcting distorted images caused by projecting onto surfaces that are not flat.

  4. Masking: The process of masking or blocking out parts of an image that should not be projected onto a surface.

  5. 3D Modeling: The process of creating a digital 3D representation of an object or surface to be used for projection mapping.

  6. Edge Blending: The process of blending the edges of multiple projected images to create a seamless visual experience.

  7. Projection Surface: The object or surface onto which images or video are projected.

  8. Projector: The device used to project images or video onto a surface.

  9. Warping: The process of adjusting the shape of a projected image to align with the surface onto which it is projected.

  10. Video Mapping: The process of using video as a source for projection mapping.

  11. Light Mapping: The process of using lighting to create a projected visual experience.

  12. Pixel Mapping: The process of creating a visual experience by mapping individual pixels onto a surface.

  13. Dynamic Projection Mapping: The process of using projection mapping to create interactive visual experiences that respond to changes in the environment or audience.

  14. Interactive Projection Mapping: The process of using projection mapping to create interactive experiences that allow the audience to actively engage with the visual display.

  15. Projection Artist: An artist or designer who specializes in creating projection mapping experiences.

  16. Projection Design: The process of creating a visual design specifically for projection mapping.

  17. Projection System: The combination of projectors, software, and other hardware used to create projection mapping experiences.

  18. Projection Mapping Software: Software specifically designed for projection mapping, often used to adjust and manipulate images and video.

  19. Projection Mapping Installation: The physical installation of projectors and other hardware used to create a projection mapping experience.
